John Fidel Oviedo, 51, of Providence passed away peacefully at his home on September 18th 2019. He was born on April 5 1968 in Sucre, Colombia, and came to the US at the young age of 8. John grew up in the small Colombian community in Central Falls where he participated in comparsas (Colombian dance folklore events) and countless quinceañera. Growing-up he was known for his quick wit and mischievousness (a latin Dennis the Menace). He attended Central Falls High-school were he was RI State Chess Champion. He strong armed his brother Carlos to become a goalie and then pushed him from the sidelines to become All State for his school. John was a dedicated and hard worker. He worked and created a family at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket RI for 30 years till it’s closing. He then went on to the VA Hospital were he found a new home that also cherished his integrity, and work ethic. Everyone he worked with knew him for his smile, his kindness and generosity.
John was a fighter and from birth he survived what many could not. With all his countless near misses in life came a maturity and centeredness that few have. He knew what was important. His love of God and faith surrounded his home, and the way he lived as he matured showed it. His constant was “relax, whats the big deal” because he knew the value of peace. He had glimpsed death and wasn’t afraid because he new The Lord stood waiting. His faith was in the Lord and he knew his hope wasn’t misplaced.
John is survived by his mother Gabina E (Hoyos) Oviedo, father Juan F Oviedo, sisters Pilar Fidalgo and Cynthia Harrington, brother Carlos Oviedo, nieces Brittany Fidalgo, Gilian Oviedo, Shelagh Harrington and Sarah Harrington, nephews Luciano Fidalgo, Juan Carlos Oviedo and Isaac Oviedo and countless friends and family who miss him dearly and will cherish him forever.
